5 tips for designing the best laundry room

At NHBB, we know that laundry rooms are one of the most important and frequently used rooms in the house. They're also one of the hardest working rooms, so it's important to design them well. In order to create a laundry room that is both functional and always looks great and stays tidy, follow these 5 tips for designing the best laundry room for your new luxury home! ( And have a look at some of our recent luxury home designs too)

1. Multi-functional laundries

Not all laundries are designed to be the same. Doing laundry seems to be a never-ending task that never goes away, so your laundry room needs to function well.

You will need to consider how you want to use your laundry space. Our creative designers can help you with your laundry design, but it is worth having a think about what you want.

One of the ways you can save space in your home, and make your home multi-functional, is to include other purposes and functions in your laundry.

  • Double use as a mudroom

Utilize your laundry room as a mudroom by including hooks for coats, shoes and umbrellas. This will help keep the space tidy while also keeping your home clean.

  • A room for your pet(s)

A laundry room is a good place for your dog's bed, or a kitty litter. Consider designing the space for this so it is part of the room and not an afterthought.

Even a dog wash area or a trough large enough to wash your dog can be considered, with shower attachments to rinse your dog easily. Your dog walking equipment can be kept here.

Don't forget to add a dog or cat door to the external door so they can come and go as they please!

2. Laundry Appliances

One of the first steps to designing the perfect laundry room is assessing your appliance needs and preferences. What type of laundry appliances do you want?  A Top or front-loading washing machine? A dryer? Your choice of appliances will have different spatial requirements and must be considered at the beginning of the design.

Do you want your appliances to be seen, or do you want them hidden from view?

How big are these appliances, and have are the laundry doors are big enough for them to fit in when they are delivered?

3. Laundry Storage design

The third tip for creating a really good laundry room is having enough storage space so that things are accessible and have their own place. A cluttered laundry is a miserable place to be in. Make sure there is enough space to keep all the equipment you need such as an ironing board, iron, detergents, washing baskets for dirty washing that can be visible or hidden, and a place for your folded laundry before it gets moved.

Tall cupboards are good for keeping brooms and mops, and other tall items that can be difficult to store. Even a vacuum cleaner can be kept in here for easy access.

A cupboard space for temporarily keeping clothes that you want to donate to charity is a great idea. You will be able to siphon off clothes that you no longer need, but still keep your laundry tidy. Read more about storage in our blog here.

4. Drying your clothes

A dryer is a good investment, but sometimes you really need a place to hang things when it is raining. Not all clothes can be dried in a dryer. Have you considered a hanging rail for newly ironed shirts, or a retractable line or rack for those times you cannot use the dryer?

5. The joy of folding and ironing your clothes

The dining room table is not the best place to fold your washing, so you will need to have a countertop designated and designed for this task. A cupboard next to it to keep the folded and ironed washing for each member of the family is needed. Hiding the laundry will keep the room looking and feeling tidy.

The laundry room is one of the busiest rooms in your home. It's where you do all of your washing, drying, and ironing. And it's also typically the least spacious room in the house. In conclusion, the laundry room is an important part of your home. It deserves careful consideration and some thought about what's most important to you in order for it to work best for you.

What Tristan says.....

"This is a great room to locate a pet door, so keep this in mind in the design.

If you are having security doors to the outside, you may have to have a pet door that comes out an external wall, and not a glass door.

Pull out ironing centres have come a long way, think about which way you iron. Also pay attention to raising the heights of the cabinets as you may find you need a step to get to the top dry if you have them located above each other."
