Where is your master bedroom going to be in relation to the rest of the House?

Locating your master bedroom depends on whether you want it to be a quiet sanctuary, or if you want it to be in the centre of things.

The age of your children can start to determine where you want your master bedroom. Does it need to be close to the nursery so that you can do night time feeds for your newborn baby, or do you want your bedroom to be near the front door so you know when your teenagers have decided to come home late at night, so you can finally get to sleep because you know they are back home? You will need to decide whether you want your kids' bedrooms close to yours, or as far away as possible.

The orientation of your master bedroom needs to be considered. Do you want your master bedroom to be bright and sunny, or cool and dark? Our fantastic designers can help you get what you want so that you get the right orientation for what you want from the start.

The Privacy you want for your bedroom needs to be thought about. You will need to make sure your bedroom is located so that nosy and noisy neighbours aren't a problem.

How big does the master bedroom need to be?

You want to make sure the master bedroom is big enough for your needs, with walk-in wardrobes and an ensuite bathroom, it can start to take up a lot of space in the overall floor plan of the house.

It can be easy to make the master bedroom too big -  so be careful with this one. You don't want it too big because otherwise, your living spaces may be smaller than they should be, because your master bedroom is too big.

We can help you to work out what the best size for your master bedroom is when you start designing with our designers - so that there are no surprises when it comes to finalising the floor plan of your luxury home.

Think about what you would like in your master bedroom - a kingsize bed, seating areas such as a window seat or seating at the end of the bed. The size of the bed is quite an important decision - especially if your toddler is going to climb into your bed in the middle of the night.

How will you design your master bedroom to match your needs?

Is your partner an early morning riser that goes to the gym at what seems like the middle of the night, or are they shift workers who need to leave for work really early?

Locating the bathroom so that using the bathroom does not wake the other partner needs to be considered. A bright light shining on a sleeping person in the middle of the night is bound to wake them up at some point.

Do you want your bedroom to be a sanctuary and almost a second lounge where you can escape? Or is it a room where you just want to put your head down and sleep? Or maybe you need two main bedrooms - your partner could be a terrible snorer, and the only way you can both get a decent night's sleep is by sleeping in different rooms.

Is a walk-in wardrobe something you really need or want? A walk-in wardrobe takes up a lot of room while not being efficient at storage. A built-in wardrobe can be a much better solution for your space and storage requirements.

What about Windows and doors in the luxury master bedroom?

Is there a fantastic view from where your Master bedroom is going to be? Make sure you position windows and doors to maximise the opportunities of the location of your bedroom.

If natural light and cross ventilation are really important to you in your bedroom, make sure that the windows are big enough, that they can be opened, and placed so that cross ventilation can occur, and are facing the right way.

A slightly bigger door to the master bedroom can make the room feel more luxurious on entry, and help when the furniture needs to be delivered.

Artificial Lighting and powerpoints - what do we really need?

The lighting in a master bedroom is important and can be an opportunity to create a restful and cozy ambiance. Think about what you will need artificial lighting for in your room - to do your makeup, possibly read a book, watch TV or just simply relax and listen to music.

Do you want your bedside lamps on the side tables, or do you want them hanging from the ceiling, or fixed to the wall?  Do you want your lights to dim or even change colour?

A master bedroom can be the most luxurious room in your home. With some careful planning and design, you can create just about anything you desire and design a suite that is reflective of YOUR needs - not what someone else thinks is appropriate for YOU!

Key tips

  • Understand the potential noise from neighbours and road when designing the home.
  • Pick windows to work in with passive solar and to allow block out blinds.
  • Upgrade the internal door for extra noise block out.
  • Have power points on different walls.
  • Lastly, don’t get crazy on the size, have it well designed and use the area in other rooms.
  • Use feature ceilings in design to create a bigger feel in terms of space.
